While heading to Vaughn Woods, a small park in Hallowell, Maine, known to locals as “Hobbit Land” for its picturesque series of stone bridges, we found this incredible bookstore that uses an honor pay system. I spent five minutes looking around the narrow store for an employee until I noticed a small sign that said: “How to Pay: Send a Check, Leave a Check, or Catch up with me another time.”
That’s how you know you’re in Maine.
I highly recommend the tavern next door, the Liberal Cup, a traditional English brewery with adorable brews on tap like “Ex-Wife Extra Bitter” and “Sow Your Own Oats Stout.” Try the Fried Haddock Reuben sandwich on rye.
